The right answer depends on how you use the room. A conservatory used occasionally for reading has different needs from one that serves as a dining room, home office or year-round family space. The aim is dependable comfort without creating excessive running costs or relying on noisy temporary equipment.

Why conservatories get so hot

Sunlight passes through the glass and warms the surfaces inside: flooring, furniture, walls and fittings. That stored heat is then released into the room. Glass is far less effective at stopping this heat build-up than a well-insulated wall or roof, particularly in older conservatories with basic double glazing or polycarbonate roofing.

The problem is often made worse by poor air movement. Warm air rises and becomes trapped at roof level, while opening one window may not create enough of a route for fresh air to move through the space.
