A heat pump should make its presence felt in the comfort of your home, not in the background noise. So, are heat pumps noisy? For most homes, the answer is no. A well-specified, correctly installed and regularly serviced system is typically quiet enough to fade into everyday life. However, like any heating or cooling equipment with moving parts, it will make some sound – especially from the outdoor unit.

The key is knowing what is normal, what may point to a fault, and how good installation choices can make a real difference. Modern air-to-air heat pumps, often called air conditioning units, are designed with residential areas in mind. When running at a steady level, an outdoor unit commonly produces a low, consistent fan and compressor sound. From a few metres away, it may be comparable to rainfall, a fridge hum or quiet conversation, depending on the model and its operating speed.

An undersized system has the opposite problem. It may run at high fan speeds for long periods as it struggles to meet demand, particularly on the hottest summer days or coldest winter mornings.
